Here is the one thing to know before you build a family trip here: Jacksonville is enormous. It is one of the largest cities by area in the contiguous U.S., which means the zoo, downtown and the beaches are real drives apart. The trick with kids is not to cram more in, it is to group your days by zone so you spend the day having fun instead of stuck on a bridge. This plan does exactly that. Take what works for your crew and skip the rest.

Day One

Animals, Science & the River

A big, exciting first day that front-loads the crowd-pleasers. Start with the zoo while everyone is fresh, then a science stop and an easy riverfront evening.

MORNING · DOORS OPEN

Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens

Go right when it opens, before the heat and the crowds. The zoo is the single best family stop in the city, with wide, stroller-friendly paths, a splash play area to cool the kids off mid-day, and gardens for the grownups. Plan on a few hours. Bring water and sunscreen.

AFTERNOON · INDOORS

MOCA Jacksonville & its Art Explorium

After lunch and a rest, head downtown to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Up on the fifth floor the Art Explorium has sixteen hands-on stations built for kids, and the air conditioning is a gift on a hot Florida day. It is also our go-to if a summer storm rolls through. (Heads up: MOSH, the old science museum, is closed for a multi-year rebuild and is expected to reopen as MOSH Genesis around 2028.)

EARLY EVENING · FREE

Friendship Fountain & the Riverwalk

A short hop across the river, let the kids run off the last of their energy at Friendship Fountain, a Jacksonville landmark since the 1960s, then stroll the flat, stroller-friendly Southbank Riverwalk along the St. Johns. It costs nothing and the water-taxi traffic gives everyone something to watch as the light goes golden.

Hop the St. Johns River Taxi

If little ones still have steam, the River Taxi is a short, fun ride that crosses the St. Johns between the Northbank and Southbank. It turns getting from one side to the other into the highlight of the day. Check current routes and times before you line up, since the schedule shifts by season.

Day Two

Beach Day, Plus Big Cats

Today belongs to the ocean. Sand in the morning, a long lazy lunch, and a one-of-a-kind big-cat sanctuary to cap the night.

Beat the midday sun with an early start at Jacksonville Beach, the easy classic for families. A wide stretch of sand, a long pier to walk out on, and a gentle, consistent break for boogie boards and first-time bodysurfers. Stake out your umbrella early and let the kids dig in.

Casual lunch near the water

When the kids start to wilt, the Beaches communities are full of relaxed, sandy-feet-welcome spots a short walk from the shore. Grab a long lunch in the shade, refuel, and let the youngest nap in the stroller before the afternoon.

Catty Shack Ranch big cats

End the day at Catty Shack Ranch, a nonprofit sanctuary for rescued lions, tigers and other big cats. Many families love the evening feedings when the cats are most active and vocal, though daytime visits are easier on early bedtimes. Confirm the current days and hours before you head out, as they change with the season.

Tip: Florida summer afternoons often bring a quick thunderstorm that clears just as fast. Keep the beach for the morning, plan an indoor or covered stop for mid-afternoon, and you will rarely lose a whole day to weather. Our rainy-day plan has backup ideas.

This is the family beach day done right. Inside the park there is a seasonal splash playground for the little ones and a calm freshwater lake for kayaks and paddleboats, plus an ocean beach a short walk away, so nervous little ones and brave big kids are both covered. Shaded picnic tables and easy trails round it out. Pack a cooler and make a day of it.
